She appears to be a bumbling, desi girl but something tells us she is not
Kangana Ranaut is back and how! The trailer of the film, Simran, is out and it is making us go ROFL. The slice-of-life film is an ode of sorts to the single Indian woman, who is unapologetically herself and doesn’t care a dime about the opinion of others. Why you ask? Well, for one, Simran goes, ‘Boyfriend hona koi character flaw nahi hai. Ladke patana toh talent hota hai.’ Now, if that doesn’t make you cheer for her already, we don’t know what will.

The film, that is inspired by the story of Sandeep Kaur, seems like a rather lighthearted take on the case. According to records, Sandeep Kaur is an Indian, who is currently serving her jail term in the US, due to her notorious bank heists. After engaging in gambling and losing a lot of money, Sandeep’s inability to pay off the debts resulted in her resorting to robbery. However, Kangana’s Simran is no heist drama. It is more about the girl behind the crime and from the trailer, it looks like a fun watch. And while it would be unfair to draw comparisons at this stage, a few moments from the trailer did remind us of Kangana’s Queen character, Rani. We can so see Rani try to hit on guys with the same cliched pick-up lines that Simran is using in the trailer.
While we are sure that the film will have Kangana playing a kleptomaniac, there sure are layers to her character. She doesn’t seem to be a thief per se. Perhaps stealing and gambling are more a clinical disorder or a form of rebellion for her.We are only analysing here, but it seems like Kangana’s character has a taste for the finer things in life, which she doesn’t mind supplementing with her stealing habits. She also seems to be hell bent on defying the patriarchy as is evident from the hilarious dialogue, snippets of which we see in the trailer. Well, we have waxed eloquent about the trailer but you won’t believe it till you see it for yourself, right? Check out the trailer here…
It is also imperative to talk about Kangana’s look in the film. It is a melange of all the characters that she’s played onscreen so far and some more. Perhaps, in an attempt to disguise herself, Kangana tries on numerous wigs and looks cool in each one of them! And when she speaks, you can also hear strains of a Gujarati accent. She appears to be a bumbling, desi girl but something tells us she is not. Perhaps it is the nonchalance with which she tells the prospective groom about her gambling and stealing habits, or maybe it is the manner in which she is jubilant when she scares him away. Simran is surely much more than a girl-next-door. Her character seems a world apart from the cliched actresses we are subjected to in Bollywood. Here, finally, is a Simran who doesn’t need her bauji’s permission to ‘jee le apni zindagi.’ And how we want to root for her already!
