GoPro, Inc. (GPRO) may look to Hollywood for its future.
Movies filmed with GoPro cameras include “Hardcore Henry” and “Red Tails”, neither of which impressed audiences much. On the other hand, several scenes from “The Martian” were shot with a GoPro camera. Director Ridley Scott said, “We used GoPro cameras in several of our biggest scenes in ‘The Martian’, and they really allowed us to capture not only the intensity and suspense of these moments, but also the intimacy of the characters themselves.”
Earning praise from Ridley Scott – who directed “Alien”, “Blade Runner”, “Thelma & Louise”, “Gladiator”, “Black Hawk Down”, “Hannibal”, “American Gangster” and “Prometheus” – is about as good as it’s going to get in Hollywood. If Scott believes in GoPro’s potential in the movie-making realm, then other big names will surely follow.
Apple, Inc. (AAPL) iPhones have also played a role in movie making. iPhones were used either partially or wholly for the following movies: “Tangerine”, “I Play With the Phrase Each Other”, “Uneasy Lies the Mind” and “Searching for Sugar Man”.
Most recently, Sony Corporation (SNE) stepped into the scene when Gary Fong – inventor of the Lightsphere diffusion system – used Sony mirrorless cameras for the production of “Best F(r)iends”.
Fong told PetaPixel, “The Sony a6300 and a7S II were used for the shoot. We used the new G Master lenses, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8, and 24-70 f/2.8 mostly.”
The race is on for alternative technology in movie making, but GoPro and Apple will likely be bigger players than Sony, and this race is absolutely more important for GoPro. However, that doesn’t mean GoPro will win.
