Mandy Moore’s new TV show is on a high — and so is her hair. The actress and singer stepped out on Tuesday at the HearstLive event in New York with killer curls that brought us back to the days of Flashdance.

The brunette beauty, known for her relaxed hair, was unrecognizable with a full head of tight, voluminous curls. We’ve never seen Moore like this before. Ever since she stepped on the scene as a blonde, bubbly singer in the late 1990s, she has been less than adventurous with her hair. The most drastic changes we had seen so far were bangs, a chop, and a color change (and she’s never veered far from brown or blonde). So, we weren’t surprised to hear the star of This Is Us was hesitant about this look at first.

Ted Gibson, the hairstylist responsible for Moore’s bold look, tells Yahoo Beauty that Moore was “nervous about it at first,” but that he persuaded her by talking to her about “how cool this look would be.” “It’s really in fashion, this kind of texture,” he said, “and if I have to see another beach wave, I will scratch my eyes out, ha!” So, Gibson told her to trust him, and she did.

While it looks like a perm, Gibson says he used a “quarter-inch curling tong from the scalp to the ends” to turn the former ’90s popstar into a ’70s disco queen, citing “Bianca Jagger, Jennifer Beals, and Jennifer Grey,” as the inspiration.

Moore debuted her new look in floor-length, low-cut velvet dress with a thigh- high slit and a thick band that stretched across her neck, creating a window to her beautiful bust. She wore strappy heels, and supersubtle makeup and jewelry, so as not to overdo the new ’do.

Clearly a fan of the look, Moore took her big hair and beautiful figure to Watch What Happens Live! after the HearstLive! multimedia installation event in New York.
